I agree that the database is probably a large measure of the
difference we observed. I could have stated that more clearly.
It takes very good database administration coupled with very good
design and programming to use SQL and a RDBMS well. The benefits
of a RDBMS are flexibility and easy of reporting, not transaction
update performance.
I posted our experience for those thinking that perhaps if they
have to learn Unix, they might as well use Oracle. It's not
that easy, if you want to preserve decent performance. It's a lot
of work and redesign, but it also take real knowledge and expertise
with Oracle and SQL.
