Please tell me more about the _cob_info CI variable and any related variables. (I have a lot more FORTRAN background that COBOL).

Since invocation of most, if not all, of the "/iX" compilers now days is
done through command files, inclusion of 'Version' information can also be
achieved by tinkering with those command files (One must put up with them
being overridden at every OS upgrade).  The following is a suggestion from
what we've been using:

     ...
      setvar _cob_info _cob_info + "$VERSION '" + finfo
("!text","fullfname") &
           + " !hpdatef !hptimef'"
     ...
