Gavin, in is typicaly eloquent fashion describes the appeal of Linux.  I
think I agree with all of what he says however this particular point is key
for me:

For an example of this one only has to go to Europe where Linux is on fire
for applications Independent Software Vendors.  I would characterize what
has happened in Europe is a recognition that a lot of people know how to
build good foundations for applications.  By applications foundations I mean
the OS, RDBMS, communications software and other middleware, etc.   If you
spend some time using these things partiularly on Linux, I believe that most
people would pronounce them to be "good enough" or at least as good as
something they have to spend money on.

Don't get me wrong, they're not MPE, however, they are at least as good as
some of the commercial *nix's.  On the other hand, the main weakness MPE has
is the relative shortage of applications and tools that the *nix's have.
Linux does not have that problem.

Europe is ahead of us in the use of Linux.  However, leading the charge are
some very practical what Gavin refers to as "solutions" builders.  These are
the people who ultimately drive sales.  Most people don't want to purchase
computers or RDBMS's.  They want applications that can do something useful
for them today.  After that, they want security, reliabilty, etc. and all
those other things that people want when they use computers.  If that
requirement is satisfied, they want to pay a reasonable price.

Here's a question everyone should ask themselves.  If you were sure you
could get a 100 user Linux system with dual 1.5 Ghz processors, RAID drives,
etc. with PostgreSQL, gnu compilers, JAVA,  Apache web servers, etc.  In
other words everything you need to get safe reliable computing with all of
today's essentials for let's say $15,000.  Would you pay $150,000 for
anyone's UNIX products and Oracle?  We'll the day is here when it is in fact
possible to do what I just described, at least for some users.  I believe as
time goes on, more and more people will be able to do this and will realize
it.  So that I don't paint an inaccurate picture let me state unequivocally,
that the Linux option is not for every commercial user today.  To drive the
point home lets just use a very unscientific 10% (I have no idea whether
that's a good number but I know it's more than 1%) for the number of
commercial users who can switch to Linux today.  Whatever the number is it's
growing.

For most ISV's in the U.S. today it would probably be a mistake to go to
Linux.  I think most organizations are mentally prepared to purchase the
leading *nix's and Windows xxx and to pay for an RDBMS.   However, there is
a technology shift occuring.  The charge is being led by ISV's  Most ISV's
don't try to make money on hardware.  Therefore, that $150,000 price tag is
a barrier to a quicker sale.  Human nature will lead the customer to want to
save the $135,000 and the ISV to remove barriers to their sale.
