TO: FACULTY, DEPARTMENT HEADS, AND DEANS

The document below, developed by the Council of Deans, outlines procedures
to be followed for the cumulative performance review. Please ensure timely
submission of these documents. If you would like an electronic copy of the
form that is used, please call my office or e-mail Barbara Verhine
([log in to unmask]). Thank you for your attention to this matter.

Cumulative Performance Review Guidelines and Procedures
(Revised January 2001)

Guidelines

¨ Refer to section 3.7.4 of the Faculty Handbook to review the policy
regarding the cumulative evaluation of tenured faculty members.
¨ The cumulative review process is distinct from the tenure review
process. It is a performance review based on a six-year period focusing on
the areas of teaching, scholarship, and service.
¨ The review is carried out by the departmental tenure committee,
constituted in accordance with 3.3.1 #3 of the Faculty
Handbook. Proceedings of the tenure committee are governed by Roberts'
Rule of Order.
¨ The faculty member will be informed at each stage of the review.
¨ If there is no disagreement, comments are not required. If an
administrator disagrees with the recommendation at the preceding level, the
administrator will send a letter to the faculty member and all prior
sources of recommendations in the CPR process. The letter will state the
reasons for the disagreement and specify the recommendation that will be
forwarded.

Procedural Steps and Timelines

____End of first full week in November. Selected faculty member(s) are
notified by the department head (or other appropriate administrative
officer of the academic unit) of the scheduled cumulative performance
review during the current academic year.

____Mid-January. The faculty member delivers (to the Departmental Tenure
Committee) a document not to exceed ten pages (a current vitae is included
as part of the ten pages) regarding accomplishments in the areas of
teaching (including documentation of teaching effectiveness), scholarship
(research, creative activities, etc.) and service over the past six years.

____End of the first full week in March. The Departmental Tenure Committee
provides written comments and recommendations to the faculty member and
forwards all materials to the department head.

____End of the second week in March. The department head provides written
comments and recommendations and forwards all materials to the dean.

____End of the last week in March. The dean provides written comments and
recommendations and forwards all materials to the provost.

____End of the second week in April. The provost forwards to the faculty
member letter, which includes the provost’s own comments and summarizes the
outcome of the process.
