perl and mpe and cpan

hi all!

i tried to connect to cpan (to get ted's image modules) and
i got this.  btw, i was logged on as mgr.perl and in the
shell....

/PERL/PUB: perl -MCPAN -eshell
Cannot open sys$command for read at
/PERL/PUB/lib/perl5/5.6.0/CPAN.pm line 103

<sigh>

if i'm reading the perl abort correctly, it's unhappy with
line 103.....

103:    $term = Term::ReadLine->new('CPAN Monitor');

fyi....
 /PERL/PUB/lib/perl5/5.6.0: echo $TERM
 hp2392a

does it matter that $TERM is....or is it something
else?        - d
