Paul,

Actually that is the approach I have usually taken. Not only does it give
you status updates but by including data/time stamps you can review the
history to see how much time was at each step. Also, by going to a file you
can review even further back to previous runs to get a more intrinsic feel
for how the process is doing over a period of time and multiple executions.

Thanx,
        Jon

Wouldn't be easier (no need for special PM programming) to have the job use
a series of 'echo' commands and report its progress into some predetermined
file that can then be viewed?

Larry,

Once worked with a chap (back-in 1988/89 at Slough, England) who used PM
Debug to change session/job names when he was waiting for a compile to
finish. Can't remember which system table he was hitting but if he's on
this
list then the details I've supplied should jog his memory and he may
contact
you directly.

Subject: jobname change

Is there a good way for a job to change its job name. This would be used
to
signal the states that a job is in. in the specific case I wish to change
the backup job name form backup to verify to signal that the backup has
completed and we are now reading the tape to verify it is readable.
