I can't comment if CRC will work for your application, but
here is my simpleton answer:

a   b   c   d   e
---!---!---!---!---!
65  66  67  68  69

   checksum = (65 + 66 + 67 + 68 + 69) MOD 256

This is how the CRC was implemented in XModem....now
you know how many decades i have been around ;)
