Well, I intended to make this a poor pun. It's an offensive move, and is, it
offends people. Certainly the feedback on Talkback Central has been less
than 100% positive. Maybe you mean to expand on that bad pun, by asking if
she intends to offend the other market leaders or to offend proprietary
systems users. She certainly says some things that seem unnecessarily unkind
to proprietary solutions, some of which also follow the open standards she
praises, one of which hp invented, and the other of which hp may wind up
owning. As for the other market leaders, I'm not aware yet of any of them
running to the government to protest the merger. The only company bigger has
been very quiet on this point.

That said, she also says that the merger is not about the PC market, but
about the server and services markets. And this seems consistent with other
actions that hp is taking. I do not think she is being disingenuous, but
rather, trying to get her message out. And getting ZD to publish her article
is not a bad approach.

Since Microsoft has a good relationship with Compaq, I hope that MS does not
see anything threatening about the proposed merger. And I believe that the
MS server space could use higher end print solutions. Servers tend to
perform batch processing (but you all already knew that), and, for the
future that is near enough to be called foreseeable when it comes to
markets, batch processing frequently requires some kind of serious print
solution.

Actually, one of my problems understanding this article is who is
the target of the offensive? IBM and Dell (and Microsoft?) or
businesses that use MPE/VMS/Tru-64/etc.?
