Boy, I hate to keep disappointing people, but old-style HP3000-based
DTC-connected serial modem connections are simply going to become
increasingly rare. In the future, if serial connections are used,
they will
be into a RAS server connected to the organization's internal
network.
Indeed, using a RAS server has become the "right" way to create a
serial
connection, client to host, using either a PPP, SLIP, of PPTP
emulation of a
TCP/IP connection. If the protocol is PPTP (point-to-point
tunnelling
protocol), you automatically have a secure VPN (virtual private
network)
connection. And, of course, you also automatically have access to
all of the
internet's standard higher-level protocols (FTP, HTTP, telnet,
etc.).
Once you have a RAS server on your network, you'll never go back to
a
DTC-based modem. And because that's true, it's very difficult (nigh
well
impossible) to justify the expense of taking months to write code
that will
soon be out of date, especially where's there no money involved.
Ah, but Wirt, the times when I miss this the most is at our disaster
recovery sites. I really hate to wait for our network people to finish
recovering our RAS server, or even the network in general to be able to
upload files to the HP. Of course, the average user doesn't care.....but
those of us entrusted with keeping that HP3000 humming (or for that matter
HP9000s), definately do.
