I may be mistaken (safe bet!), but isn't this what we did when the Soviets
were occupying Afghanistan?  As I recall, one of the groups America backed
in their fight against the USSR WAS the Taliban militia.  It would seem to
me that we have both an opportunity and a responsibility to rectify an
earlier mistake.  The basic premise of "The enemy of my friend is my friend"
seems sound historically, but also historically, America doesn't exactly
have a perfect batting average in selecting which side to back.  Vietnam and
Stalin-era Russia both spring to mind.
