My apology, I may have underestimated the number (I think it came from this
list serve, but some time ago).

I stand corrected.

Thanks! And again my humble apologies...

Mike,

Where do you get the number that HP has several hundred 3000's maintained by
4 system administrators? I can tell you right off that that is not true.

We do have several hundred HP3000's that run the company but we have much
more
than 4 system managers. We probably average 10 systems/SM which can probably
stretch to 15/SM..

Just curious..

To paraphrase Edward Morrow, the obscure we see immediately, the blatantly
obvious takes a while longer.

The cost of ownership, and the flexibility of the HPe3000 is the best I've
ever seen.
The operating system is stable and affordable, so is the database management
system.
The job control language and command interpreter have a high degree of
flexibility, giving you the option to modify the system to fit the
operational and business environment.

We have 24 servers, mostly NT and a smattering of UNIX systems.
Most of those systems have interfaces (requiring a small pc to function as a
gateway).
When we did an audit of our interfaces to our 3000 we were surprised to find
that we had 35.
Most just requiring a Powerhouse Quiz report, and a quick FTP. Some updates,

a quick ftp process, and Powerhouse QTP to update the database.

Simple, easy, self documenting.

If you need to talk to our chief programmer, database administrator, hp
systems administrator, and interface programmer - you see just one
person...not four.
The thanks goes to simplicity, stability, and flexibility of MPE,
Powerhouse, and Image.

What would the demise of MPE mean?

Well, do the math. If there is, lets say, 40,000 HP MPE shops.
Those 40,000 shops could have a maximum of one person per 3000 (I know that
is a bit steep, but hey, lets dream and assume they are one man shops -
after all HP had several hundred 3000 maintained by only 4 systems
administrators).

So, lets now replace the MPE systems with IBM and Oracle (assuming you can
afford the DBMS and can find a DBMA). That means the 40,000 MPE people now
becomes 160,000!

So, the demise of MPE means 120,000 highly paid technology jobs!
Not to mention the billions of dollars for software, and hardware!
Just think of the boost to the tech sector!
(sorry my attempt at being sarcastic)

Just my humble opinion...
