Dear UTC,
GEAR UP, our project to promote college readiness in the kids in five
inner-city middle schools, is back, looking for your help. We are
continuing our after-school programs at Orchard Knob, Franklin and
Chattanooga Middle Schools as well as developing a new one at Dalewood
Middle. These programs will bolster reading and math skills of 7th and 8th
graders while giving these students a good mix of art, recreation and
general enrichment. A key component of each program will be the staff, who
will serve as instructors, counselors and mentors. It is therefore crucial
that we have enough staff members to allow students to be put into small
groups--and here's where we need your help. We are looking to add another
10 or so UTC students to our returning core of after-school counselors.
We are paying $7 an hour, and we need workers Monday-Thursday from
2:05-5:15 or 3:00-5:45 (depending on the school), starting October 1st. If
you know students on our campus who would be good leaders and models in the
effort to help the GEAR UP kids catch up, please ask them to pick up an
application packet at the GEAR UP office in the Metro Annex basement. If
they or you have questions, please e-mail me or call at ext. 5386.
Thank you for any help you can give us. This community has been incredibly
generous about opening up its human and material resources to GEAR UP
students, and we appreciate your support of this effort.
