If you, like me, have a child or grandchild and want them to be able to keep
watching Sesame Street each weekday instead of cartoons on our local public
television station, WTCI-45, please send an e-mail to Kelly Williams,
director of programming, at [log in to unmask] Feel free to copy
[log in to unmask] (WTCI President and General Manager).
After 30 years of showing Sesame Street at least once every weekday, five
days a week, WTCI has pre-empted it so they can add two more "edutainment"
cartoons to their already cartoon-heavy morning schedule. Sesame Street is
still on the schedule, but only on weekends when frankly I believe kids
should be interacting with their parents rather than the TV. There's
nothing wrong with the cartoons, and they do have subtle educational
messages, but nothing that compares to the direct approach of Sesame Street.
Obviously, I don't watch Sesame Street much these days myself, but my
daughter does. It's one of the few things we let her watch, so we're really
going to miss it. Even if I didn't have a child, I would feel better about
the world knowing the kids are still able to watch Bird Bird and Ernie and
Bert and learn how things like the alphabet, counting, and the like instead
of just being entertained by cartoons.
