I think I'll take a break and read that popular novel
"The Little Red Hen"

I wonder if Washington has heard of this book?

If so, they've really got it backwards....
oh yea, we're talking politicians here!

No longer possible. Yes, we all know that SS was not designed to be a
retiree's sole retirement savings plan, and that the retirement-savings
aspect of SS was supposed to be a secondary component. Whether we like
it or not, millions of people have *nothing* saved to support their
post-retirement lifestyle, and SS is going to be the only thing keeping
millions of people from being a 100% drain on public-support facilities.

I think the best we're likely to see is some kind of "matching" program,
where every net dollar you put aside in a given tax year (as reported on
your 5498s) produces a dollar of refund from SS. That way people who
won't manage their retirement savings remain covered, but people who
want to manage their own plan can do so.
