shooting my feet with FTP

I _thought_ I was being careful, but tried
shell/iX>cd /usr/local/bin
shell/iX>pwd
/usr/local/bin
shell/iX>ftp
ftp>open remotemachine etc
ftp>cd /usr/local/bin
ftp>mput *.*
...and Holy Moly, I'm not only not getting what I wanted, I can't seem to
terminate the process.  Help?  (not having much luck finding ftp docs,
either.  (3 versions of "user guide" at docs.hp are just enough to get me
into trouble, no real help)
