Samba/iX .7? will work just fine from MPE/iX 5.5 pp7 forward. If
your system locked up, I would suspect an underlying network issue.
Make sure you have the latest set of network patches in place.
Samba doesn't use anything tricky or special (it only needs PM
for changing effective users and resolving passwords). I ran
V0.7c under 6.0 for well over a year here without a hitch.
