This may be due to the MPE byte stream emulator.  We try to
simulate the file as if it were a byte stream file whenever
it is opened or stat'ed by a POSIX application.  For fixed,
ASCII files, I believe that trailing blanks from the end of
each record are omitted in the emulation process.  This may
explain what you are seeing.
