Yep, it works fine. You can even have one name for two physically different
printers.

As for what you are doing (switching from DTC printer to network), I usually
do it on the fly (takes less than 15 minutes on a fairly large system,
though YMMV):

0. create the appropriate new entry in npconfig
1. clear out the queue and stop the spooler on the DTC "printer"
2. change it to a terminal in nmmgr, validate and dynamically re-configure
3. go into ioconfig and delete the class name(s) for the printer
4. add the new network printer ldev
5. add the class(s), exit ioconfig and you are done
