Well, at least there isn't an S (AS400), is there...;-) I have enjoyed the reliable harware of the 3000 for a little over 8 years now, and I know many of you have for much longer. As long as that doesn't change, they can call it the Carly Fiorina Machine as far as I am concerned. Thanks for the info.

Brace yourself Forrest, there is an HP e3000 A400.

The new servers from HP are the e3000-A400, the e3000-A500 and the
e3000-N4000. They run on the exact same hardware as the HP-UX boxes called
the HP9000 A400, HP9000 A500 and HP9000 N4000.

My guess is HP has decided to illustrate the fact MPE/iX runs on standard
HP Enterprise Servers. In the past, the K class of the HP 9000 was
represented in the e3000 category as the 9x9 servers, but most people saw
them as different boxes. I do not believe MPE was ever present in the D,
L, R and V classes, but I am willing to be corrected on that. MPE is still
not represented in the Superdome class either.

It is my belief HP, for better or worse, decided to pick this time to merge
the nomenclature because of the totally new (for these servers) I/O
architecture, called PCI. PCI, (Peripheral Component Interconnect (532MB/s
in HP's current implementation) has been around since 1994 (it started at
132MB/s) when the first Pentium was introduced. PCI represents a vast
improvement in throughput over the existing 3000 I/O technology of HP-HSC
(High Speed Connect (160MB/s)) and HP-PB (Precision Bus (32MB/s).) The
jump, IMHO, is as great as going from ISA to PCI in the desktop and the
server.

Perhaps it is a good time to merge the names.

Kind regards,

Denys. . .

Subject: A500? What happened to 9XX

Change that 5 to a 4 and all of our servers will turn blue. I know I
haven't ordered hardware in awhile, but it hasn't been that long. What
happened to the old naming convention? Is IBM making HP hardware now;-)
