It allows you to change the order of name resolution, i.e. try /etc/hosts then
DNS, or try DNS then /etc/hosts. You can also define what action should happen
if a naming resource is unavailable or returns a "not found" condition.
Basically you gain additional flexibility and reliability.
FWIW, if your applications are linked with the open source BIND resolver
library (http://www.bixby.org/mark/bindix.html), then you already have a
similar NSSWITCH ability today implemented via a BIND file called
/etc/irs.conf.
