yes, i'm using the traditional definition of 'append' :-)  'only add data to the
end of the string'.  however, i feel confident that at some sites, the system
manager would want to 'lock' hppath.

how?  if something downstream of a system logon udc reset hppath, how would the
'system' ever know it?          - d
