Unless I am missing something, I don't think your example will get me what
I want. What I want to do is match where, for example, the fourth byte in a
field is anything *except* a blank. The ? will match anything, including
blanks, and the b will only match blanks.

Your example will match anything where byte 6 is only the letter "C" and
bytes 7-11 are only blanks.
