I'm attempting the same. In my case it's a barcode label printer with
no PCL support, attached to a jetdirect box. However, unless I'm doing
somethring wrong, you cannot convince OUTSPTJ (?) to not include some
PJL and PCL initialization and termination strings. It will always
start with <Esc>%-12345X (PJL I believe), followed with some PCL code
to reset the printer.

Done this, doesn't do the whole job.
Are there perhaps other (undocumented) settings to force "raw" mode,
i.e. just sending the raw data to the printer?
