Hi fellow listers !

Donna and Sylvia wrote about e3000 and 9000 N-Class CPU boards and memory
modules. Here are product numbers, taken from my favorite source, the HP
Sales Builder config tool.

e3000 N4000 440 MHz CPU board : P/N A6176A -> Different. I think Donna's
 9000 N4000 440 MHz CPU board : P/N A5500A    assumption about different
firmware
                                              is correct

e3000 N4000 550 MHz CPU board : P/N A6177A -> Same as above
 9000 N4000 550 MHz CPU board : P/N A5866A

e3000 N4000 1Gb memory module : P/N A4923A -> Identical. Expect the e3000
board to
 9000 N4000 1Gb memory module : P/N A4923A    work on a 9000 and vice-versa

Re: CPU boards, frequencies, cache sizes, and, for what I know, other
technical specifications are identical. Therefore, I would go along with
Donna's suggestion and assume different firmware. One other thing (which I
think is actually part of firmware, please correct me if I'm wrong) is PDC
(Processor Dependent Code), which handles all the low-level functions which
are different from one system to another. Therefore, expect PDC to differ
significantly between a 9000 and an e3000.

Hope this helps.

i believe the processor boards for the 'n' version of mpe systems have
special firmware on them
so that they can only be used on mpe systems. it's my understanding that
the boot process looks
for this information -- if it's missing, then no boot. it was hp's solution
to the problem they
had with certain used hardware vendors buying (cheap) used 9000 systems,
running the magic
program and suddenly having (more expensive, but still used) 3000 systems.

i don't know about that one....              - d
