Nike disc mount problem on MPE/iX 6.5 DocId: KBRC00004378 Updated: 4/19/01
PROBLEM
Systems with Nike disks configured as ldev 2, 3, etc. will see an
AVR error during START NORECOVERY on 6.5 and these disks will not
mount. A fix from the 5.5 patch MPEKXT8 did not make it into 6.5.
A 6.5 patch, MPEKXD1, has been created to address this issue. This
patch has been included in Powerpatch C.65.02.
This problem can be avoided if a custom CSLT is created with HPINSTAL
(CD-ROM update tool) and Powerpatch C.65.02. The custom CSLT can then
be used to successfully UPDATE the system with the Nike discs attached.
If HPINSTAL is not an option, MPEKXD1 will not be able to be installed
until after 6.5 is up and running, so a special binary patch needs
to be installed to allow the disks to mount when booting 6.5.
CONFIGURATION
MPE/iX 6.5 ONLY
RESOLUTION
If HPINSTAL with the 6.5 CD-ROM and Powerpatch C.65.02 is not an option,
the following procedures will need to be done for the 6.5 systems that
have a Nike disk configured as ldev n, where n = >1:
1. Test the remote console (parallel console) facility prior to
starting the update process, so that the procedure in step 3
can be performed remotely by Hewlett-Packard. The only other
alternative is to have an HP engineer onsite to install the
binary patch.
2. Perform update from 6.5 CSLT, and then boot from primary path.
Do NOT perform START NORECOVERY.
3. HP will establish remote console, if done remotely, and use
the passworded utility, SADPATCH, to install a binary patch to
the START program.
ISL> sadpatch start
Enter password or a (CR) to exit:
Patch:display sda_scsi_event_msg_proc+$78
sda_scsi_event_msg_proc+0078 @... 40ad0082
Patch:modify sda_scsi_event_msg_proc+$78
sda_scsi_event_msg_proc+0078 @... 40ad0082 = 340d0002
Confirm that the binary fix is correctly in place:
Patch:display sda_scsi_event_msg_proc+$78
sda_scsi_event_msg_proc+0078 4... 340d0002
4. A START NORECOVERY NOSYSSTART can be performed and all disks
should mount.
5. Complete the update process to MPE/iX 6.5 according to the
System Software Maintenance Manual. If you are installing
Powerpatch C.65.02 there will be no need to install MPEKXD1(A)
separately.
6. Update from the CSLT that was created that includes the MPEKXD1(A)
fix, but do not perform START NORECOVERY.
7. HP will establish remote console, if done remotely, and use
the passworded utility, SADPATCH, to remove the binary patch
that was installed in step 3.
ISL> sadpatch start
Enter password or a (CR) to exit:
Patch:display sda_scsi_event_msg_proc+$78
sda_scsi_event_msg_proc+0078 @... 340d0002
Patch:modify sda_scsi_event_msg_proc+$78
sda_scsi_event_msg_proc+0078 @... 340d0002 = 40ad0082
Confirm that the binary fix is backed out correctly:
Patch:display sda_scsi_event_msg_proc+$78
sda_scsi_event_msg_proc+0078 4... 40ad0082
8. A START NORECOVERY can be performed and all disks should mount.
9. A new CSLT should be created reflecting installation of the
MPEKXD1 fix along with removal of the special binary fix.
