Whoever is doing DNS for you should be able to add appropriate entries for
you if you ask... Hopefully that's not a difficult task.

Running your own DNS isn't a bad thing, if you're up for it, but not
necessary.

You also don't need to have dns turned on on your 3000 for NetMail/3000 to
function - you can just put the IP address of your primary DNS server in
Netmail's global config screen and it'll use DNS even if the rest of your
system doesn't.

assistance required

Thanks to all for your fast replies.

We don't have our own DNS, we use our ISP's one to
validate/resolve email
                addresses.

Looks as if we are going to have to use DNS Bind/iX on the
3000 and pass
unknown requests to our ISP's DNS. We've commented out the
nameserver
entries in RESLVCNF file and have turned off NetMail until
Bind/iX is up and
running. At the moment we are only using NetMail as a backup
for our M$ mail
                server so that's OK.

                Special thanks go to:

Ted (Ashton) for reminding me that most HP manuals are
available online.

Rich (Roemer) for a print of the resolv.conf man page from
his U*ix box.
Couldn't find the Posix one on our 3000, wonder where it
is?
