Hi HP3000-L,

We're in the process of planning the purchase of a new N-Class 3000 box,
but we have some questions that we haven't been able to get answered by
our sales rep (yet). Does anyone here have the answers to the
following:
...
We're currently looking at the N4000-440 line. The brochures I've read
indicate that all the N-Class boxes have 12 PCI slots, but we were
wondering about multiple CPUs also. Does anyone know if there is a
different cabinet for the 2, 3, and 4 processor boxes, or is upgrading
just a matter of adding processor boards. Is that a field upgrade, or a
cabinet swap?

DS: The boxes are the same if your have 1 to 8 processors. MPE/iX only
DS: supports 4 processors at this time. Upgrading from a 1 to a 2-way
DS: server or from a 3 to a 4-way server only takes the addition of an
DS: HP e3000 N4000 processor (HP 9000 N4000 processors will not work,
DS: system will not boot). However, upgrading to a 3-way server (and in
DS: the future to a 5-way or a 7-way server), also takes an inbox upgrade
DS: in addition to the processors since there is added material required.
DS: These various add-on HP e3000 N4000 processors and upgrade kits are
DS: all on the Hewlett-Packard corporate price lists.

I have also heard that in the tiered support pricing scheme that HP has
adopted, the tier cost is actually the 'potential' usage cost. Meaning
that if you get an N4000-400-440, that you'll be in the 4-processor tier,
even if you currently only have 1 processor board installed.
Is that true?

DS: If you buy an HP e3000 N4000-400-440, you have bought a four processor
DS: server with four 440 MHz processors installed and therefore you are on
DS: our highest of three tiers, Tier 6. If you buy an HP e3000
DS: N4000-100-440 you are getting one 440 MHz processor and therefore are
DS: on our middle tier, Tier 4. If you upgrade either a 1 or 2-way N4000
DS: to a 3 or 4-way N4000, you move from the middle tier, Tier 4, to the
DS: highest tier, Tier 6.
DS:
DS: Just to summarize, for the new HP e3000 A- and N-Class servers,
DS: Tier 1 includes the A400 and A500; Tier 4 includes the N4000-100-220,
DS: N4000-100-330, N4000-100-440 and N4000-200-440; and Tier 6 includes
DS: the N4000-300-440, N4000-400-440, N4000-300-550 and N4000-400-550.

regards,
 Dave Snow, CSY
