During this week the Remora will attempt to recover a submarine crew from
120 metres of water more than 10 kilometres west of Rottnest Island. They
are trying to mirror the Kursk disaster. The first exercise, dubbed Black
Carillon, is to locate the sunken sub using sonar & latch onto its escape
hatch. It will be filmed by the ABC for the documentary series Australian
Story.

The Remora is a remotely operated rescue vessel, capable of recovering
crews from a depth of more than 500 metres. It is powered by a cable
attached to a mother ship & is capable of remaining uw for far longer
periods than battery powered vessels. It can carry 7 sailors at one time to
the surface with each dive expected to take up to 2 hours.

Will be interesting to see how successful this exercise is as it is the
most complex peacetime exercise ever undertaken by the navy of late.
