just to muddy the waters.....

the tapes are reasonably new -- no guarantee but.... -- and the
drive has been cleaned.  i didn't know this earlier, but i guess
there are two tape drives on this system and both are doing the
same thing for the same store command.  to me, that rules out a
bad tape drive....maybe the controller is failing?  anyhow....the
system is supposed to get rebooted....and i'll let everyone know
the outcome.  thanks for all the help!             - d
