As you can see, English and Spanish are virtually the same language, at
least
for those words that have a Romantic root. In that regard, of all of the
Spanish/English words above, one of the words that has always greatly
impressed me is the Spanish word "red." It says a great deal about the
evolution of language, at least over a relatively local scale and a short
period of time (two millennia).

The original Latin root is "ret" (as in "retina", which means "little net").

As Latin evolved into its various vulgar forms, ret became "red" in Spanish
as the "t" sounds were softened. However, in a separate and somewhat
simultaneous evolution, ret became "net" as it moved northwards, ultimately
into English.
