From the Sydney Morning Herald
Friday March 9.

Rough seas may have made most Sydney beaches off limits this
week but some swimmers have found it hard to stay away.

Heavy seas with a swell of up to two metres forced the closure
of all beaches but Bondi as lifeguards found themselves immersed
in rescue activity.

They made 40 rescues along the coast from Wollongong to the
Central Coast in the past three days.

"Some beaches that have remained open over the past few days,
including Bondi in Sydney, have had their fair share of rescues
when people have ventured outside the patrolled areas," said Mr
Ian Vaughan, vice-president of the Australian Professional
Lifeguard Association.

"They have also been stung by bluebottles and the occasional
jellyfish which arrived with the heavy swell and strong onshore
winds."

Randwick Council lifeguards have been especially busy since
Sunday and have had to use jet skis for several rescues at
Maroubra and Coogee beaches.
