I found Stroustrup's "The C++ Programming Language" very good. Scott
Meyer's "Effective C++" and its sequel are very helpful. Coplien's
"Advanced C++ Programming Style's and Idiom's" is excellent for design, but
I'm not sure how helpful it would be in debugging a port. It might be if
the program uses the patterns in the book.
