Personally, I was very happy with Bruce Eckel's "Thinking in C++".
The material was very dense, but he explains it well, providing
plenty of examples.

He has since revised the work, splitting it into two volumes.
The first volume is available for purchase in paper form, but
it is also freely available in HTML and PDF, as well in Palm/Visor
format.  See:

I've not looked at the second edition, but I feel confident in
recommending it based on the earlier work (which, in fact, grew
out of two previous versions of the book).
