Actually, God told Cain and Abel to bring of the firstlings of their
flock. Abel did. Cain brought fruit (from the ground which was cursed).
God accepted Abel's offering but not Cain's. Cain takes it out on Abel.

Sounds like a familiar story. Instead of doing what's right, eliminate
the guy that makes you look bad.
