At the behest of Larry Barnes (thanks Larry) I reproduce here the results of
the question that I asked before and its resolution:

The command was as follows:

printo #J148;Search="Compressed data required";&
  context="MPE/XL directory stored",&
  "The partial backup date has been set to"

The problem was that the new(er) version of Roadrunner/Backpack gives out a
string that says "MPE/iX" not "MPE/XL". This caused MPEX to choke - I don't
know why, it shouldn't. Replacing the "XL" with "iX" and running the command
interactively and all was OK - it extracted the 11 lines that we were
expecting.

End of story. Thanks to those that replied.
