Just happened across one more data point worth mentioning.  I've been doing
quite a bit of work in vi from home (via PPP).  Vi, as a number of you already
know, uses single-character reads.  On NS/VT over a slow modem, these can been
painfully slow.  So I tried switching to Telnet.  Much improved, thank you.
It appears that Telnet is a significantly lighter protocol if the data is
traveling at one character per packet.
