I have just started using the OpenSSL package on the HP3000. It is open
source, free, and, since the patent expired, legal! It compiles without
problems on the HP3000.

Despite the name, there's a lot more than SSL. I use it to create S/MIME
files with 128-bit encryption. It supports all the major ciphers.

On the downside:
The documentation is rather incomplete. The certificate handling is
primitive--essentially manual.

Encrypting the database would be interesting, but I'm not sure how you would
keep the key safe.
