Companies Support Aging HP 3000s
InnerVu, TERiX Plan to fill gap as HP Retires 9x7.

Two service providers are partnering to help customers extend the lives of
their HP 3000 9x7 servers, which Hewlett-Packard Co. plans to retire next
year.
InnerVu Corp. and TERiX Computer offer hardware and software service plans
for HP 3000 9x7 customers. Plans include on-site maintenance and next-day
parts delivery for customers doing their own maintenance.
HP recently announced that it will end support for the decade-old HP 3000
9x7 line on April 30, 2002. Operating system support for the 9x7 will be
discontinued, as well. Support for Release 5.5 of MPE/iX ended on Dec. 31,
2000. Support for Release 6.0 ends April 30, 2002. HP says a new version of
MPE/iX, Release 7.0, "will not have code to support any HP 3000 9x7
servers."
Marshall Butler, marketing manager at InnerVu, says 9x7s represent about 40
percent of the installed base of HP 3000 servers, adding that as many as
24,000 are in use nationwide.
The alliance partners offer a cache of 9x7 inventory items, which HP reports
have become increasingly scarce. In terms of stocking parts, InnerVu will
leverage its affiliation with Computech Systems Corp., a remanufacturer of
HP 3000 servers. InnerVu and TERiX, which specializes in Unix server and
workstation maintenance, also will provide software assistance for Release
5.5 through Release 6.5.
Butler says the companies have only recently started to promote the 9x7
maintenance service. He notes that a proposal has been submitted to
Washington State community colleges for 9x7 maintenance.
