Hi Jeff,
No problem, REPL() it just fine.
I just thought QUOTE() was a bit more descriptive in the context
of hacking quotes in strings.

You are right. For a limited time there was a CI function named
quote() that attempted to alter its input string such that the
returned value could be explicitly referenced (!rtn_val_var) with
out causing the CI to interpret embedded meta characters. For ex:
setvar x input(': ')
echo !var1 ![a+2] >foo <--- user enters
setvar y quote(x)
showvar y
Y = echo !!var1 !![a+2] !>foo
However, quote had some fatal flaws and in the end provided nothing more
than can be accomplished via the repl() function. In release 6.0 exp 1
quote was removed and there was a brief mention of this in the Communicator
