It's not exactly bad firmware, it is incompatible firmware that is the problem. I am holding in my hand
a Firmware Upgrade Tape P/N C1503-89210 for C1503 DDS drives that upgrades the firmware to a
level that allows the MPE upgrade to run. This version is 10.7. I'm sure that in the 2 years I've had
this tape that HP has released more recent versions.
