Well, yes, DS is used quite a lot in Compatibility Mode (CM) and there are still some *things* in use that have to have it,
which relates to upping the DS limit and usage in 6.5--or so I've been told (or is that tolled?).

A better analogy would be that DS (and Extra Data Segments in general) have
gone the way of MS-DOS, which is to say that echoes of them will live on
until the heat-death of the universe.
