I have a secondary DNS server (bind 8.2.2p5) running on an
external network.  It is configured to pick up slave info from our
primary DNS server along with two fall back units, themselves
slaved to the primary.

The /etc/resolv.conf file has the dotted addresses of the unit
itself, the primary, and one of the other slaves as listed as
nameservers.  The /etc/hosts file contains the dotted IP
addresses and names of these other servers, along with that
of the unit itself.

I can ping and traceroute to the unit using its dns entry
names.  I can telnet to it.  I can ping out of the unit when
using a dotted address and I can traceroute out using a dotted
address.  Both fail when using a name, including the one true
name of the machine itself. In other words in can't ping itself
by name. No name resolving is taking place whatsoever as far
as I can see. Yet doing a set all in nslookup yields normal
information, the name is correct and the search list is as
expected.

The named daemon is running and I have cleared out the old
db files from named.data.  The db.cache file is present and up
to date.  named-xfer can transfer zones from the primary
without error although named doesn't seem to use the new
data.

When I sig_named restart these entries appear in the syslog:
