PALO ALTO -- Hewlett-Packard Co. has bought the garage where
the company was founded in 1939, along with the adjoining
house, for $1.7 million.

Hewlett-Packard, which recently has been featuring the
garage in an ad campaign with President and CEO Carly
Fiorina, jumped at the opportunity to buy the property from
a company called Restored Properties when it came on the
market in August, spokesman Greg Winter said.

HP will fix up the garage, which has fallen into disrepair,
but there are no immediate plans to turn it into a public
attraction, he said.

"The garage isn't just the birthplace of Hewlett-Packard.
It's also the birthplace of Silicon Valley," he said. "It's
an important site historically for the entire region."

William Hewlett and David Packard started their company with
a borrowed $538 in the garage at 367 Addison Ave., when
Packard and his wife, Lucille Salter Packard, were renting
the house. A coin toss was used to decide the name.

The company began making electronic test equipment and later
branched into calculators, computers and printers. HP, which
is now moving aggressively into information-technology
consulting, has 86,000 employees worldwide, with more than
$42 billion in revenue last year.

"Unix _is_ user friendly.
It's just very selective about who its friends are.
And sometimes even best friends have fights."
