An elephant seal made an emergency pitstop to give birth a bit further from
home than planned. She came ashore on Dover Beach, 80 kilometres south of
Hobart, Tasmania giving birth to a pup that looks around 45 kilogrammes.

ATM rangers & residents from the small fishing town have mother & baby
under surveillance hoping Mum doesnt become stressed causing her to abandon
her pup. Fingers crossed the next 3 weeks fly by as that is the crucial
period for the pup who needs to gain strength & weight.

Normally elephant seals breed on the sub-Antarctic Macquarie & Heard
islands. Though, in the early 19th century elephant seal colonies were as
far north as Bass Strait before hunting wiped them out in that area :-(
Would be nice to see a new colony take up residence permanently there
though :-))
