Well, in this case, I'm looking at the master dataset. The item number being return exceeds the number of items contained in this master dataset.

Is it possible that mode 302 is returning the item number within the database as a whole and not as a part of a particular dataset? Would that be why a call to DBINFO with mode 102 would be required?

Is there any way I can determine the item number within a particular dataset?

When calling DBINFO Mode 302, try following it with a call to DBINFO Mode 102 to get detail info for the Item Number in question.

I think Mode 302 returns the item number of the item that is named in the related master dataset.
