We are still looking for such utilities for the HP3000:

1. Encryption. Yes, PGP is freely available, but with the restriction of "not
for commercial use", a phrase that is hard to understand, but that makes our
attorneys edgy. Earlier in the year (or perhaps late in 1999), there was a
suggestion that I pursued with nothing to show so far. We need a product that we
can use on the HP e3000 and the resulting file can be unecrypted by an outside
vendor that might be using a Unix or NT platform. Any ideas or suggestions?

2. Compression. LZW is freely available from the kind folks at Telemon, but has
the same "not for commercial use". Informally, we have heard that it is OK to
compress files and send them out as part of our business as long as we are not
putting LZW into some package we are distributing or selling. Again, this is not
good enough for our attorneys, so we are looking for a product that we can use
on the HP e3000, and the resulting file can be uncompressed by an outside vendor
that might be using a Unix or NT platform. Any ideas or suggestions?

I have found old documentation from a CSL tape from the mid-90's that has both
GZIP and LZW without, apparently, the license strictures. I supposed we could
find those executables, but that does not solve the problem of the outside
vendor. We have also discovered on our system a copy of LZW that came from one
of our software purveyors with no restrictions, but, once again, that does not
help our outside vendor

Thanks,
