While the actual problem reported was actually consistent with the error
(label not 40 words ==> tape was physically "bad"), I believe I've also seen
this error occur when the tape was created on a 7980 w/HARDWARE compression
enabled -- the initial header "looks OK" to STORE/RESTORE since at least
some portion of the record needs to be recognizable to the tape drive, but
if the tape drive doesn't have the hardware compression firmware at all, it
simply cannot read any more of the tape...

[did anyone ever get around to writing a software de-compression routine for
tapes stored w/hardware compression?  i.e., simply read the bytes from tape
"as is" and then do the decode process from the data now "on disc"]
