There are several new HP intrinsics that will work with dates in multiple formats, but I believe they are only available as of release 6.5.  I think the one you want would be HPDATEVALIDATE - but see also HPDATECONVERT, HPDATEDIFF, HPDATEFORMAT, and HPDATEOFFSET.  The appropriate manual can be seen at

I need to validate a date field (user input) in cobol source code.
Does anyone know if there is an HP 3000 function that validates a date.
the date is in the format of CCYYMMDD.
