I am no longer a member. The last HPWorld conference that I attended
was Toronto ('95; the first was Montreal, '83 IIRC).
It happens that The 3000 NewsWire performs an excellent service
in print, and hp3000-L is invaluable for immediate information
needs, but neither is responsible for my allowing my Interex
membership to lapse.
I used to attend the conference because I learned so much
and could apply the knowledge immediately upon my return.
Unfortunately, the costs kept increasing, while the value
of the information that I received at the conference decreased.
For the same amount of cash today, I'd likely get much more
value from the O'Reilly Open Source Convention.

Speaking of O'Reilly, the 3rd edition of Programming Perl is out:

Actually, the signs on the East coast are more of the
"You are now passing..."
variety. As for getting lost, I once passed (by mistake) a turn
I wanted in Crystal City, VA. "No problem," methinks, "I'll just
make a U-turn at the next light." Light? What light? Next thing
I knew I was on some road (Capitol Expressway?) headed into DC.
"No problem," methinks foolishly again, "I'll just turn around
at the next offramp." Wrongo-dongo. The next ramp had no provision
for returning to the same road. Instead, I went off on some OTHER
road the I didn't want. I don't recall how I ever got back to
Crystal City.
