Chuck, you're not visualizing it correctly.  The o-ring holder is on the
SIDE of the hose protector.  It's a little circular dimple formed on the
side of the hose protector.  The o-ring doesn't go around the hose.  You
just pop the o-ring into the holder with a fingernail while the regulator is
attached.  Nothing needs to be dissassembled.
